Abstract. A perennial problem facing an R & D effort is the allocation of scarce resources amongst competing proposals or projects. One conceptualization of this problem evolves from the notion of concentration of resources. That is, the balance between more and less expensive projects. The Science Research Council (SRC) has pursued a policy of concentration of resources within both selected areas of research and specific research units for a number of years. This paper presents both a technique for monitoring the concentration of resources and an analysis of the effect of the SRC's policy on the distribution of grants for the years 1964 to 1974 inclusive.

A pityriasis rubra pilaris-like eruption has been described in patients with dermatomyositis. These patients showed generalized follicular hyperkeratosis and diffuse thickening of the palms and soles. Histopathological findings consisted of keratotic plugging of the follicular infundibulum and features of erector pili myositis. We report on an 18-year-old woman with dermatomyositis. The diagnosis was established by characteristic enzymatic alterations, electromyographic pattern of myositis and the findings in a muscle biopsy, although the patient had no evidence of muscular weakness during a follow-up of 14 years. She developed an erythematous and squamous eruption associated with diffuse palmoplantar keratoderma. Histopathological features consisted of a papillomatous epidermis with spicules of compact eosinophilic hyperkeratosis over the tips of papillae that were not related to hair follicles. Pityriasis rubra pilaris-like eruption seems to be a characteristic although uncommon cutaneous manifestation in dermatomyositis.

Abstract An experimental study to define the active-passive behaviour of a ferritic (Fe-18%Cr) stainless steel in methanol, as a function of the concentration of Cl− ions and acidity level, is reported. The addition of water was considered to be an inhibitor capable of reinforcing the passive film of stainless steel. The effects of acidity and of the addition of water on the anodic and cathodic behaviour of Ni, Mo, Fe and The Fe-18%Cr alloy are reported.

Abstract The Casimir energy of a massive Dirac field at finite temperature and confined between two parallel infinite plates is computed using a method proposed by Schwinger. The boundary conditions are those of zero current through the plates, as inspired by quark confinement in the MIT bag model for hadrons. We use Schwinger's original regularization by a cutoff in proper-time. We comment on the analytical continuation method of regularization, which allows the employment of Epstein function techniques, and on the different possible expressions for the final answer.

Abstract The Casimir energy of a massive Dirac field confined between two parallel infinite plates is computed using a method proposed by Schwinger. The massless case is obtained as a limit of the massive case. The boundary conditions are those of zero current through the plates, as inspired by quark confinement in the MIT bag model for hadrons. We use an analytical continuation method of regularization which allows the employment of Epstein function techniques. The calculation using Schwinger's original regularization by a cutoff in proper time is also outlined.
